Barefield is synonymous with Irish Traditional Music and the students in the school have opportunities to learn tin-whistle at an early age. They progress to a wide range of instruments including fiddle, concertina, harp, flute, accordion, banjo, mandolin, pipes, piano, drums so that they can partake in Céilí bands and groups.
These ensembles are done through the medium of ear-training and learning by ear with immersion in the rich culture of Ireland. All pupils are encouraged to practice for solo and ensemble-playing with some making it to All-Ireland standard every year since 1997.
Links have been made in the USA, Sweden and Bulgaria with students from these countries performing in Barefield over the past number of years. The drive for excellence comes from Denis Liddy who plays fiddle. He has played with many groups and bands over a long number of years and has recorded many CDs.

Irish Traditional Music teaching takes place after school (see timetable).
