This week Cúla4 ar Scoil teachers will present the theme of “Food”. They will look at the importance of balance and moderation in our diet, identify the key nutrients that are necessary to promote healthy growth and development and investigate the role of the digestive system in this process.

Múinteoir Caitríona will encourage us to push ourselves out of our comfort zones and try some foods that we haven’t tasted before. She will introduce some new vocabulary and terminology related to taste and food preferences which she will then use to write a food review. Fiachra will look at some colourful ways to express hunger and identify some similarities and differences between food related vocabulary in four different languages. He will create an appetising menu for Cúla4’s very own restaurant and explore some of the factors that influence our food choices e.g. packaging, cost and value for money.

In the SESE lessons the teachers will look at food and farming in Ireland in the past, explore where the food on our plates today comes from and question our role in a more sustainable food production system. They will both use food to extend our understanding of fractions. Caitríona will examine the relationship between a half and a quarter while Fiachra will calculate fractions of a set and identify simple strategies to add and multiply fractions.

During the programme Cúla4 ar Scoil, children will be invited to participate at home and will be asked to send in pictures or videos of their work to the programme. The content will also be available online on Cula4.com and on Cúla4 YouTube.  Click on image to enlarge.
