We are very grateful once more to all the parents that have supported this initiative this year.  It allows the school to gain rewards from Scholastic.  These rewards are then used to purchase accelerated reader books for the school library.   I would also like to thank the parents’ association who help with the three days of running the shop when the Scholastic Fair is in progress.

In July books were researched and ordered from the rewards earned in the Scholastic Book Fair.   These books were to be sourced on the basis that pupils would be able to completed Accelerated Reader tests on them and were of a practical level where possible.  A lot of hours were put in to verify as best as possible on ARBookfinder website against the books available on the Scholastic website.  Once the books were ordered the orders had to be be tracked as 6 separate deliveries were made during the month of July.  The books received were crosschecked against the orders placed.

In August, once all orders were received, the books were prepared for the school library.  This involved barcoding and cello tapping inside the front cover for our Aladdin system at school.  Then each individual book was identified in ARBookFinder website and the details placed on a printing template for each book which you find at the back of the library book.  Additional colour coded stickers were placed on the spine of each individual book with some cello-tape to keep them in place.   Having then prepared all the books they were logged onto the Aladdin system.  All books were then covered with plastic coverings.  When this ran out additional coverings were ordered and placed on the books.  The above process took an enormous amount of time and effort to be prepared in an orderly manner.  As you can see a significant amount of time is put into ensuring the books are ready for use in our school library.  I am very grateful to the support and help I received during the month of August for the above endeavors.

The books were then brought to the school and have been made available to the pupils of Barefield National School for the academic school year 2020 / 2021.   Some irregular sized books remained uncovered and these were covered by a few members of the library committee during the month of September using their Croke Park hours.  Many thanks to all my colleagues in ensuring we have such an extensive library and that it is well maintained during these unprecedented times !
